Education

He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague (1992 – 1997). 

As part of continuing judicial education, he attended dozens of seminars, conferences, courses, and other educational events, mainly in the field of civil law and European Union law, held both in the Czech Republic and abroad (e.g., at the Europäische Rechtsakademie, Trier, Germany; Escuela Judicial, Madrid, Spain; University of Oxford, Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, United Kingdom; or Institut Européen d’Administration Publique, Luxembourg).

He speaks English fluently and has a basic command of Russian.

Career

Between 1996 and 1998, he worked successively in three law firms based in Prague, specializing in commercial law. In 1998, he joined the Regional Court in Ústí nad Labem as a judicial trainee and, in 2000, was appointed as a judge of the District Court in Liberec. In 2002, he was transferred to the Regional Court in Ústí nad Labem, Liberec branch. As a judge of the commercial division, he primarily dealt with disputes involving foreign elements, law of business corporations and commercial register matters, disputes about claims arising from industrial property rights, unfair competition disputes, and cases related to bankruptcy and settlement.

Since 2008, he has served as a judge (and since 2010 as a President of the Panel) of the Civil and Commercial Division of the Supreme Court. As a member of Judicial Department 29, and since 2017 Judicial Department 27, he specializes mainly in the law of business corporations, other legal entities and trust funds, and private international law. He is a member of the Records Panel (which he chaired from 2017 to 2021) and a member of the Grand Panel of the Civil and Commercial Division of the Supreme Court.

He is an examiner of the Ministry of Justice for judicial examinations and an examiner of the Czech Bar Association for bar examinations. 

As a member of ad hoc legislative committees at the Ministry of Justice, he contributes to drafting legislation in the areas of law of business corporations and other legal entities, as well as law of civil procedure.

Lectures

He is a member of the European Judicial Network in Civil and Commercial Matters and the Internal Judicial Network in Civil and Commercial Matters, a lecturer at the Judicial Academy, and an external lecturer at the Judicial Academy of the Slovak Republic. He collaborates with the Czech Bar Association and the Notarial Chamber of the Czech Republic as a specialist lecturer, participating in the education of lawyers, articled clerks, notaries, articled notarial clerks and notarial candidates. He also works externally on selected educational activities with the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague and the Faculty of Law of Masaryk University in Brno. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Law of Charles University and the program council for the “Commercial Law” study program at the Faculty of Law of Masaryk University in Brno. He lectures on private international law and law of business corporations for various institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Publications

He is the author and co-author of numerous professional publications, including a commentary on the Business Corporations Act, now in its third edition, and a commentary on the Private International Law Act.

Awards

In 2022, he received the “Lawyer of the Year” award in the Civil Law category.
