On 4 December 2024, the President of the Supreme Court, Petr Angyalossy, received a delegation led by the President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kosovo, Ms Gresa Caka-Nimani, who visited Brno together with other judges of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo and representatives of the Council of Europe from the Council of Europe Office in Pristina. The meeting focused on the independence of the judiciary, ensuring a fair trial and strengthening the rule of law.

During the meeting, key topics such as the independence of the judiciary, the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, the cooperation of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court in the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, and cooperation with the European courts were discussed. The President, who has been the head of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo since May 2021, praised the independence of the Czech judiciary and the transparency with which the Supreme Court presents its decisions, including through the Collection of Decisions and Opinions of the Supreme Court.

The President of the Supreme Court, Petr Angyalossy, stressed that the independence of the judiciary is the cornerstone of democracy and the rule of law and that sharing experience between countries is essential to strengthen public confidence in the judiciary.

"I am proud of the Czech judiciary, which is among the fastest in the European Union, even though Czechs go to court much more often than other nations. At the Supreme Court alone we handle almost six thousand decisions a year," added Petr Angyalossy.

The meeting was part of an effort for closer cooperation between a relatively new European state and established judicial systems. President Caka-Nimani stressed that the Czech judiciary is considered by Kosovo judges as an example of an efficient, high-quality and independent judiciary. Both sides agreed on the need for further dialogue and exchange of experience that contribute to strengthening legal awareness at the regional and global level.

In the Republic of Kosovo, the Constitutional Court is the final authority on the interpretation of the Constitution and the conformity of laws with it. Currently, there are 6 men and 3 women among the judges of the Constitutional Court. Gresa Caka-Nimani was elected President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kosovo on 17 May 2021. She has been a judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kosovo since December 2015.
